Types of Street Sweepers
There are a few different types of street sweepers you can purchase, each tailored to different applications. While they offer different mechanisms, they’ll typically all use brooms to pull debris in toward the hopper. Here’s what you should know:
- Mechanical broom sweepers: Mechanical sweepers pull debris toward a conveyer belt that moves it into the hopper. This design is one of the most common types in the U.S. today. They’re good for road construction and resurfacing applications as well as infrequent sweeping. They are not very efficient for fine particles or for work on porous surfaces but work well for heavy materials. Often, mechanical sweepers have elevated hoppers for dumping into another truck or container.
- Vacuum sweepers: Instead of a conveyer, vacuum sweepers move debris into the path of powerful suction that pulls it into the hopper. These sweepers are good for fine materials and uneven surfaces. They must use a spray of water at broom level to control dust, which can sometimes react with materials. Vacuum sweepers are good for removing substances from porous pavement, cleaning catch basins and moving over uneven surfaces.
- Regenerative air sweepers: Regenerative air sweepers can suck up material over the whole width of the sweeper, which is a wider range than that of a vacuum sweeper and can get into places that a broom can’t reach. It creates a powerful blast of air to get dirt out of small cracks. It’s also cleaner, due to a dust separation system. We have these robust regenerative air sweepers for sale, which are best used on flat surfaces and for light debris. They typically offer the best results on even ground.
When identifying which type of sweeper you need, consider your current pain points, the type of material you need to clean, what will the sweeper be doing most of the time, the condition of the surfaces and any regulations you may need to meet. If you’re unsure about which is best for you, we are always happy to help walk you through it.
Applications for Street Sweepers
Many municipalities use sweet sweepers for general, routine cleaning of the roads in a city, but they can also be used as a catch basin cleaning machine or to sweep up leaves in the fall. Airports may also use sweepers to clear off runways at high speeds. They may also need to manage de-icing fluid for environmental regulations.
In the world of construction, powerful sweepers can handle heavy materials like broken pavement and debris, while industrial environments may need more specialized tools. Many materials, like cement, grains and coal dust, can react with water to harden or become sticky, so they need waterless solutions.
