Municipal Safety and Equipment Training

OSHA-Compliant Safety & Equipment Training for Public Works and Utility Crews

MTech provides Municipal Safety and Equipment Training designed specifically for public works departments, sewer and wastewater crews, and utility contractors operating in high-risk environments. For over 50 years, we have assisted municipalities by helping improve compliance, reduce liability, and strengthen field performance through practical, hands-on instruction.

In confined spaces, on excavation sites, and when operating heavy equipment, mistakes are costly. Injuries create downtime. Improper equipment use damages assets. Regulatory violations increase exposure. Our Municipal Safety and Equipment Training programs address both safety protocols and operational best practices to protect your crew and the equipment.

When teams understand both OSHA requirements and proper equipment operation, confidence and performance improves across the board.

Build a Safer, Stronger Workforce

In confined spaces, excavation sites, and heavy equipment operations, mistakes are costly. Injuries create downtime. Improper equipment use damages valuable assets. Regulatory violations increase liability exposure.

Our Municipal Safety and Equipment Training programs are built to prevent those outcomes.

When crews understand OSHA requirements, safe work practices, and proper equipment operation, safety becomes proactive instead of reactive. The result is fewer incidents, stronger performance, and measurable cost savings across your organization.

Professional training is not an expense,  it is operational risk management.

SAFETY TRAINING COURSES

This six-hour course is where MTech built its reputation, and it remains one of the most essential safety trainings we offer. Permit-required confined spaces present serious, unique risks, and this class is designed to give you the knowledge and confidence to recognize hazards, follow proper procedures, and stay compliant in the field. During this course, participants will learn:

  • The scope of OSHA’s space standards and how to identify a confined space and their risks.
  • The requirements for a permit-required confined space entry program.
  • Identification of different types of confined spaces and how to recognize potential hazards before entry.
  • The responsibilities of all parties involved, including entrants, attendants and entry supervisors.
  • Rescue planning, safe entry procedures, and proper selection of required safety equipment
  • Identifying when rescue and emergency services are required.

Important note: This course focuses on classroom instruction and safety awareness. It does not include actual physical entry into a confined space (manhole, simulated structure, or other enclosed environment) during sessions hosted at MTech.

The training does include instruction on the use of tripods, davit systems, body harnesses with rescue lines, and winches in the classroom setting and with branded equipment sold and serviced by MTech.

Hands-on entry can be incorporated only when training is conducted at a customer’s facility that has an accessible confined space available and the customer specifically requests practical entry exercises at the time of scheduling with MTech personnel.

Training Cost: $1,995

We host a full-day Confined Space Entry class at MTech on the second Friday of each month and open to the general public.

Contact us to reserve seats for you or your team at the MTech class or to schedule a session at your facility dedicated solely to your personnel.

Air Monitoring Safety for Confined Space Entry

Atmospheric hazards remain one of the leading causes of confined space injuries and fatalities.

This course trains workers and supervisors in the proper selection, use, and interpretation of portable gas detection equipment required for safe confined space entry. Emphasis is placed on identifying and controlling atmospheric hazards commonly found in sewer systems and other confined spaces, including oxygen-deficient atmospheres, combustible gases (LEL), hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), and carbon monoxide (CO).

Participants receive hands-on training using RKI Gas Detection multi-gas monitors and learn:

  • Proper pre-entry atmospheric testing procedures
  • Correct testing order (O₂, combustibles, toxic gases)
  • Continuous monitoring requirements
  • Bump testing and calibration fundamentals
  • Alarm set points and emergency response procedures
  • Recognition of atmospheric hazards including oxygen deficiency/enrichment, flammable gases (LEL), hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, and other toxic contaminants
  • Characteristics and behavior of gases in confined environments
  • Proper placement and sampling methods
  • Interpretation of readings and required evacuation protocols

This course supports OSHA-compliant confined space programs and ensures workers understand not just how to operate a monitor, but how to respond appropriately to changing atmospheric conditions.

Hands-on instruction is conducted using professional-grade RKI Gas Detection instruments.

As an authorized RKI dealer, we provide practical training aligned with manufacturer best practices to ensure reliable performance and regulatory compliance in the field.

This course will provide a basic education on vacuum/hydro excavation technology. Given this is evolving technology that is newer to many end users, it can be very dangerous if not conducted properly. During this training we review the critical safety procedures you must follow including identifying the pressure ratings of your underground utilities, proper PPE needed, and safe operation of a high-powered vacuum and water system.

We also dive into the advantages of the technology and the different applications where viable for the replacement of traditional excavation and why it is safer and more efficient. We will then take time to differentiate and educate on both air excavation and hydro excavation and what the best applications are for both technologies. Both technologies are critical for the future operations in both the drinking water and wastewater industries. Applications range from repairing a water main break to lead line verification to digging up a sewer lateral or repairing a sewer main and many more.
